What is laser eye surgery?
Laser eye surgery, or laser vision correction, involves the use of a laser to change the shape of the surface of the eye (called the cornea). By altering the shape of the cornea, laser eye surgery can remove any focusing error, just like wearing a pair of glasses or contact lenses does.
The difference is that laser eye surgery is a permanent solution, so you can live life to the full again, and enjoy clear vision without the hassle and restrictions of wearing glasses or contacts.
What are the different types of laser eye surgery?
There are two main types of laser eye surgery:
Custom Surface (also called PRK)
A single laser is applied directly to the surface of the cornea to correct your vision. This is the classic form of laser eye surgery, which is less common nowadays, but still useful for a small number of patients who may be unsuitable for LASIK because they have very thin corneas. Learn more about Custom Surface PRK here.
LASIK
In a LASIK operation, a flap in the cornea is created, and the laser vision correction takes place deep within the cornea, rather than on the surface. LASIK is a more advanced form of laser eye surgery that can treat a broader range of vision imperfections, and offers many other benefits as well. Find out more about the benefits of LASIK here. |
