Air shows are traditionally about showing off the skills of pilots and the speed of different aircraft. Air shows have been exhibitions of aviation.
Now, at the New Zealand International Air Show, we're introducing competition into the mix.
There will be international air races and other air sports competitions - with winners and losers.
This new format is designed to make the event even more entertaining - and a better product for TV and sponsors.
January 2013 in Auckland won't be the full Air Show of the Future - but it will be a major development in that journey.
The New Zealand International Air Show will feature world class flight displays during Auckland's Anniversary Weekend as well as showcasing our $10 billion aviation industry. The event will use innovative TV technology to bring the action to spectators using giant outdoor screens.
The air show will run from 10.00 am until 5.00 pm on Saturday, January 26 and Sunday, January 27 and from 10.00 am until 6.00 pm on Monday, January 28th, Auckland's Anniversary Day public holiday. Displays will include head to head international air racing, air sports competitions, fast military jets, civilian aircraft and experimental aircraft. International aviation acts will be announced in the run up to the air show. The main flight display will be between 1.00 pm and 4.00 pm each day.
